Carving a square-wave trail out of the underground, Jonny Faith’s debut EP Blue Sky On Mars demonstrates a devastating knack for penning organic, computer dub infused with a cosmic sensibility. Drawing on the 8-bit dub template, Faith has managed to craft his own brand of distinctive beats/bass music. Littered with space-age sweeps and ground-shaking bass blasts.

Jonny Faith - Blue Sky On MarsCarving a square-wave trail out of the underground, Jonny Faith’s debut EP Blue Sky On Mars demonstrates a devastating knack for penning organic, computer dub infused with a cosmic sensibility rarely adopted by his peers. Drawing on the 8-bit dub template like the highly revered Disrupt, Faith has managed to craft his own brand of distinctive beats/bass music. Littered with space-age sweeps and ground-shaking bass blasts, title track Blue Sky On Mars showcases his hip-hop roots in its half-time swagger, whilst Crimson Ride and Meteor Shower exemplify his ability to expose the human element of a highly machine-driven genre. The rhythmic playfulness on both Azeemo and Faze Two reveal a highly informed dub influence that blends seamlessly with the arpeggiated playfulness, also presenton Gyration, which caps a sublime EP with a meteoric dubstep cut. Planet Mu’s Ital Tek and Dizz1 (Rush Hour / Kindred Spirits) strip bare their respective remixes and have sculpted truly individual works, with the former favouring the 2-step distorted dubstep route whilst Dizz1 skips and jumps through a future beats rhythmic labyrinth. A digital bass workout from up and comers Bzode! closes of the release. Having emigrated 7 years ago from his hometown of Edinburgh, to Sydney, Australia, Faith is known for his dazzling contribution to his adopted countries music scene. New hip-hop, beats and bass music fill his pioneering radio show ‘For The Heads’ on 2SER.fm and his clubnight-cum-compilation ‘Headroom’ run along with scene cohort Monk Fly have paved the way for many break though producers. Alongside Aussie compatriots and Headroom players Mark Pritchard (Harmonic303 / Africa Hi-Tek) and Dizz1, Faith is at the forefront of the dazzling future beats currently on export out of the southern hemisphere. Reinvention is what defines Jonny Faith, and his forward-thinking approach is as much rooted in the galactic reaches as it is in Jamaican dancehalls. |
